5.4 Optical Fibre Fabrication

5.4.1 Fabrication Basics

The fabrication of a standard optical fibre starts with a glass preform; a rod of glass usually around 20 to mm in diameter and 1 to m in length with the desired cross-sectional dopant structure. This preform is held vertically at the top of a fibre drawing tower, shown schematically in Fig. 5.8, where it is lowered into a furnace and heated to around C.

Fig. 5.8Schematic diagram of a fibre drawing tower. The top section of a clamp, feed mechanism, furnace and diameter monitor is universal in all applications, however the pulling mechanism varies depending on the desired diameter after the draw. For larger scale draws (to mm) such as when drawing rods, capillaries or canes (see Sect. 5.4.2), the middle section which utilises a belt system is used. For drawing fibre the lower section is used to coat the fibres and wind them onto a drum
