5.4 Optical Fibre Fabrication
5.4.1 Fabrication Basics
The fabrication of a standard optical fibre starts with a glass preform; a rod of glass usually around 20 to mm in diameter and 1 to m in length with the desired cross-sectional dopant structure. This preform is held vertically at the top of a fibre drawing tower, shown schematically in Fig. 5.8, where it is lowered into a furnace and heated to around C.

For larger scale draws (to mm) such as when drawing rods, capillaries or canes (see Sect. 5.4.2), the middle section which utilises a belt system is used.
